Two ways to ask “is this a scam?” — what each checks, where it works, what it costs, and which fits you.
Norton Genie and Shieldr both answer the same question: is this message a scam? You give them a suspicious text, email or link, and they tell you what they think and why. They differ in price, where they work, and what you can send them.
Shieldr is our app, so we've tried hard to be fair here. Norton Genie is free and works on more devices, and for many people that settles it. Everything we say about Genie comes from Norton's and Gen Digital's own pages and the App Store, linked at the bottom, and reflects what they said as of September 2026.

Norton Genie takes text messages, social media posts, emails and websites. You copy and paste the content or upload a screenshot, and Norton says results come back in seconds. (Norton) In ChatGPT, Gen Digital says Genie looks at the language, intent and tactics in a message — impersonation, pressure to act quickly, requests for sensitive information — alongside URL and domain checks. (Gen Digital)
Shieldr covers the same everyday ground — texts, screenshots, emails and links — and adds two things people often ask about: voicemails, which it transcribes before judging, and photos of paper letters, like a fake invoice or a "final notice" in the mail. Links are checked against Google's list of known malicious sites (Google Web Risk).
This is Genie's clearest advantage. It runs on iPhone (iOS 15 or later), Android (8 or later), and in a web browser at genie.norton.com — Safari, Chrome, Edge or Firefox. (Norton) Since March 2026 it's also available as an app inside ChatGPT, on free and paid ChatGPT plans where apps are supported. (Gen Digital)
Shieldr is iPhone only. It works from the share sheet, so instead of copying and pasting, you tap Share in the app where the message is and pick Shieldr. If anyone in your family uses Android, Genie will cover them and Shieldr won't.
Norton Genie is free, and the App Store lists the iPhone app as free. (Norton, App Store) Shieldr is paid with no free tier: Solo is $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year, and Family is $14.99 a month or $59.99 a year.
That's a real difference. If you get a suspicious text now and then and just want a second opinion, a free tool may be all you need.
Norton says you don't need to sign in to use Genie on the web; a Norton account is only needed to post feedback on its community board. (Norton) Using Genie inside ChatGPT requires being signed in to ChatGPT. (Gen Digital) Norton's Genie FAQ doesn't describe how submitted messages are stored, so we haven't made a claim about it here.
Shieldr needs an account (email, or Sign in with Apple, including Hide My Email). Its privacy policy says it does not store the content of the messages you check — the text, images and audio are sent for analysis and then discarded — and keeps only the verdict, the explanation and the sender's number or email where one can be extracted.
Genie gives its assessment along with why it reached it and suggested next steps. Norton is upfront that Genie can't always tell whether something is a scam; in that case it gives advice on what to do next. (Norton)
Shieldr answers with one of three words — safe, suspicious or scam — and a one-sentence explanation. If there isn't enough to go on, it says so rather than guessing. From the answer you can forward the text to 7726, block the sender, or have Shieldr draft a reply.
Share the text, screenshot, email, voicemail or a photo of a letter to Shieldr and get a plain-English verdict — safe, suspicious or scam — with a one-sentence reason. It's one more check before you tap anything, not a guarantee.
Get Shieldr on the App StoreUse Norton Genie if you want something free, you use Android or a computer, or you want to check something from a browser without signing up. For most people with an occasional suspicious text, it's a sensible first choice.
Use Shieldr if you're on iPhone, you'd rather share from the share sheet than copy and paste, you get scam voicemails or letters as well as texts, or you're looking out for a parent and want the Family plan. It costs money, so it makes most sense if you check messages often or for someone else.
Whichever you pick, neither tool catches everything. If a message involves money, a password or a one-time code, contact the company directly using a number or website you looked up yourself. If you want to compare more options, see our roundup of scam checker apps.
Yes. Norton says Genie is free to use, on iPhone, Android and the web at genie.norton.com. Shieldr is a paid app with no free tier.
No. Shieldr is iPhone only. If you use Android, Norton Genie has an Android app and a website that works in any browser.
If your parent uses an iPhone and you want to see when they've checked something and what the verdict was, Shieldr's Family plan is built for that. If cost matters most, or they use Android, Norton Genie is free and simple to use.
